OMG! I used to hate it when someone asked me what I did for a living. Tell them “internet marketing” and then count the blank stares and baffled looks.
Maybe it doesn’t bother you, but it bothered me until I found answers that put an end to those awkward moments.
You gotta get that practically everyone has an “already always understanding” of EVERYTHING you might say. Whether they know what it is or not!
For example, I say “lawyer” and it already has some sort of meaning for you (depending on your personal experience of lawyers). The same is true with doctor, plumber, mechanic, secretary – whatever.
And if they don’t have an “already always understanding,” their little minds make one up. Tthe more foreign it sounds, the more problematic it becomes.
Tell someone you do “internet marketing” and they’ll look at you like you said “biohazard removal technician.” Or worse yet, they’ll think you’re a spammer or into internet porn.
So, make your life easier. Plan ahead so you’re not caught off guard and create some canned replies that easily explain what you do and minimize the odd stares.
Here are a few examples I use to describe what I do for people who have no clue.
- I’m an internet publisher.
- I have an internet advertising business (or agency).
- I create and design websites.
Hopefully you get the picture. In each case I’ve used at least one word that already has meaning for the listener, like publisher, advertising, website design.
And, of course, if they pursue the matter, then I can relate what I do to what they already have some idea about. For example, if they want to know more about internet publishing I can say something simple like, “It’s just like publishing books, magazines or newsletters except there’s no physical product. It’s all created digitally online.”
And then, depending on the person and the situation, I ask them a question about themselves to divert attention away from me. The conversation continues with no more awkward pauses!
So give it a try. Use these or create your own replies to “what do you do for a living” and practice them. If you get positive reactions – great! If not, keep working on them.
But be proud of what you do and never feel like you have to explain or defend yourself for being an internet marketer. You’re an innovator – the rest of the world will catch up someday.
