Make Money From Home Today – The Name Game

A rose by any other name might smell as sweet, but choosing the wrong name for your business could spell disaster for you.

Here are some simple suggestions to stimulate your brain cells and help you create the perfect name for your new business.

The Professional Name

If you’re running a serious business targeted at professionals, you’ll probably want to keep the name sober, but memorable. A good formula is your surname, followed by what you do. For example, “Beckers Tailoring,” “Emrick Engineering” or “Owensby Marketing.”

The Cool Name

If you’re going for the younger tech-savvy market, you might want a less formal name. Names of this type should be kept to one word, and preferably written in lowercase, like you’re writing a URL or email address. You could even go as far as adding “.com” to the name. For example, which sounds better; “Fun House” or “funhouse.com”?

The Cute Name

Cute sells! Seriously, don’t underestimate the power of this concept. If you don’t have much of a marketing budget, this is a good way to get a quick recognition and brand identity. Just remember, choose wisely – you have to live with the cuteness for a long time.

The Mash Up

Take two or three words that describe your business, chop them up, mash them together and turn it into one word. You’ll end up with names like FedEx (Federal Express), Microsoft (Microcomputer Software) and Nabisco (National Biscuit Company). It sets you apart from all the others and makes it easier to get a great dot com address (‘coz who else would think of it!).

The “What the Heck Does That Mean” Name

If all else fails, you can simply string together unrelated sounds until you come up with a made-up word. This is surprisingly a good way to create an original name. Look at some of the successful internet businesses these days, like Ebay.com, Ooma.com and Kaneva.com.

Make It Easy And Unique

Whatever you use for a name, make sure it’s easy to pronounce, easy to spell and easy to remember. Also, take time to check that no-one else is already using your name. You’d hate to get rolling only to find out you’re being sued by someone who claims they had the name first.

Anyway, put some time and thought into the project. The days of naming your business so it shows up first in the phone book are over.
